ABSTRACT

Whether through employment, home remodeling, or through any contact, a large majority of us get exposed to hazardous paint fumes through out our lifetime . The study is therefore aimed at investigating the serum heavy metals and histology of the lungs. Twenty adult male wistar rats weighing about 130-160g were used for the study. The rats were divided into two groups A and B of ten each. Group A acted as the control while group B was the experimental animals. Group B were exposed to paint fumes 3 hours daily for three weeks respectively. On the last day of the exposure, the animals were sacrificed through chloroform anesthesia and blood was obtained via cardiac puncture, the lungs were excised and fixed in 10% formal saline and processed. Tissue sections were stained with: Hematoxylin and Eosin for general histology and periodic Acidic Schiff for type 2 alveolar cells. The alveolar cells of the treated groups undergo fibrosis compared to the control group. Data was analysed using graph pad statistical software version 8.1, and the data were presented mean ± SEM. Student t-test was used to 10 compare the dependent and independent variables. P-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. From the statistical analysis, there was significant increase in serum heavy metals (lead, cadmium and chromium) of the experimental animals when compared to the control. Chronic inhalation of hexavalent chromium compounds may cause allergic asthma reaction, ulceration in the mucus membrane, perforation of the nasal septum and bronchial carcinoma . This study showed that exposure to paint fumes increases serum heavy metals which may be hazardous to human health and well being.
