SUMMARY
Fieldwork is an important part of Geology as it provides many of the data on which our knowledge of the Earth and its evolution along with that of life through time. In this particular field exercise, the first location visited was the iduowina sand mine. The first location also doubles as the first stop. As the name shows, it is a site or an area in the community “iduowina” where sand is being mined in large quantity from an open pit. Iduowina sand mine is located between latitudes N6° 26’ 34.5” and longitudes E5° 36’ 39.6” with an altitude of 67.30m. The second stop was a site of biological weathering. The biological weathering is the breakdown of rocks by action of roots, this breakdown is as a result of the tree trying to gather nutrients and to achieve this, the roots get bigger and stronger. This movement of roots leads to the loosening of the rock sediments. It is also called Biomechanical weathering. The third stop was a voodoo structure which gets its name from its appearance which is that of a shrine. The fourth stop was a mud crack. Mud cracks form in very fine clay material that has dried out. As the moisture is removed, the surface will split into cracks that extend a short way down into the mud. These cracks form polygons on the surface of the mud. Stratigraphy and correlation of sedimentary rocks were studied. Stratigraphy is the scientific discipline concerned with the description of rock successions and the interpretation 36 in terms of a general time scale. The Precambrian basement complex in Nigeria is a part of the Pan-African mobile belt which lies between the West African craton, the Congo-Gabon craton and the southern part of the Tuareg Shield. When we visited Oluku Dump Site, we observed the many waste types that were there. These waste categories can be broadly categorized as either home waste, industrial waste, or municipal waste. The field exercise offered a wonderful chance to see these geologic features live and learn about them insitu which made it easier to understand.
