ABSTRACT

The oviductal glycoprotein 1 (OVGP 1) gene is a key glycoprotein that plays an important role in reproduction and is known to potentially affect fertility in various mammalian species, including rabbits. The study was conducted at the Rabbit Unit of the Farm Project at the University of Benin, Nigeria, situated in a humid forest zone of Nigeria. About 2ml of blood samples collected from different rabbit populations were used for the study. The blood samples were sent to Inqaba biotechnology West Africa Ltd, Ibadan, for DNA extraction and further analysis to determine the genetic diversity and phylogenetic of OVGP 1 gene in rabbit and other species. The results showed varying levels of genetic divergence between rabbit and other animal species, with values ranging from 0.000 - 0.414. The highest distance was observed between rabbit and Ovis. This suggests a distant evolutionary relationship, possibly due to divergence from a common ancestor. The genetic distance between rabbit 1 and rabbit 2 was lower, with values ranging from 0.266 to 0.294. This indicate that they are more closely related genetically and have a more recent common ancestor.
