ABSTRACT
This study was undertaken to discover determine the strength properties of Plywood in Nigeria and comparing them to the properties of other countries.
Different types of Plywood used includes 9 Ply Plywood, 7 Ply Plywood, 5 Ply Plywood, 1Ply Plywood and Medium-Density Fibreboard MDF. Different strength test carried out includes Tensile Strength, Compression Strength, Static Bending Strength, Moisture Content and Density.
The results showed that for Density and Moisture content test, the tested specimen fall in the range of around 800Kg/m3 for Density and 5% to 15% for moisture content which signifies it is between range with other countries Plywood. For compressive strength, it falls in the range of 31-41.4Mpa, for Tensile strength, only 7 Ply and 5 Ply fell in the range of 27.6-34.5Mpa. For both Tensile and Compressive strength taes, it was observed that 9 Ply Plywood recorded the lowest value due to its different joining pattern and it being a Softwood Plywood.
Therefore, on the basis of the results of the strength test above, the strengths gotten from the tests above shows that the strength properties of Plywood in Nigeria can be compared to other Countries.
