ABSTRACT

Gender equality is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making. This research examines gender equality and labour law in Nigeria. Gender inequality remains pervasive in the Nigerian labour context. Women have been relegated to the domestic sphere that are not renovated or valued. Relying on traditional gender roles and child care responsibilities, some employers assume that female employee is less dependable than male employee. The research discusses the existing legal regime protecting gender equality in the right to labour in Nigeria. It also discusses the effectiveness of the legal regime on the right to labour. The research shows that there is a high discrimination of women in the Nigerian labour market. By allowing employment discrimination to continue in the society, the end result is an increase in poverty, inequality, disutility and other impacts which are legion. The research discusses the lacunaes in Nigerian labour laws that support the discrimination of women from employment and even in the workplace. Therefore, the research recommends that there is a need for the executive, legislature, the judiciary and the unions to promote the rights of women to employment. The government should enforce the rules and procedures that regulate how the different institutional domains interact. Recruitment should be carried out with gender equality in mind.
