ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to investigate the fungi associated with the fruit rot of Nauclea diderrichii. Samples of diseased fruits were collected from trees around the Faulty of Agriculture and  Health Centre, University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City.

Potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium was used for the isolation, sub-culturing and stock culture of isolates in the laboratory. Cultural characteristics of isolates were recorded daily. Stock cultures of the isolates were maintained on PDA in Bijou bottles. Identification of isolates under the light microscope was carried out.  Pathogenicity tests were carried out.

The symptoms observed on the fruits were dark brown spots which expanded gradually on the fruits and later become sunken. From the isolation carried out, two fungi isolates were found to be associated with the rot; Rhizoctonia solani and an unidentified isolate. After the pathogenicity test, Rhizoctonia solani was found to be the casual organism of the rot of the fruits.
