Abstract

Folklore remains a critical feature of modern African prose fiction. This essay examines the significance of folklore in Elechi Amadi’s The Concubine. Textual analytical method is used to read the novel while employing reader-response theory. The following ideas resonate in the essay: four elements of folklore are identified and explored to unveil their artistic significance to the plot, theme and characters in the novel. The essay concludes that Elechi Amadi employs rituals to initiate conflict, enact flashback and characterise characters, employs proverbs to reinforce themes, develop characters and persuade characters to take active as well as deploys folk songs and omens to deepen the sense of loss, contextualise interpersonal conflicts and emblematise mockery in the novels.
