ABSTRACT
The study investigated patterns of fruit consumptions and nutritional knowledge among undergraduates at the University of Benin. The study was based on the busy lifestyle of students and their eating habits have become packed with preservatives and processed foods that are not only devoid of essential nutrients but can also cause some harm to their body. The data was collected from primary sources through a set of questionnaires administered to 469 respondent.
The study employed multi stage sampling technique in the selection of respondent. Result indicated that majority of the respondents consumed fruit that are not expensive to buy in the market. Furthermore, the study reveal that banana is the most consumed fruit among the respondent and majority of the student have good nutritional knowledge of fruit. Moreso, there is no significant difference between male and female undergraduate student of University of Benin in fruit consumption patterns.
The study reported that high price of fruit, nutritional value, availability of fruit, taste, lack of storage facilities, fear of germs and seasonality are factors influencing fruit consumption. Government providing subsidy for fruits, creating storage facilities, creation of special markets by school authorities were fruits could be sold in the university campus were recommended among the undergraduate student.
