FROM CIVILIZATION TO ANIMALIZATION: AN INQUIRY INTO THE CULTURE OF INDECENT DRESSING AND NUDITY AMONG CONTEMPORARY YOUTHS

ABSTRACT

9 People dressed modestly to respect their family, self, and culture. But today, it is increasingly becoming obvious that indecent dressing has gradually taken over the dress pattern. Indecent appearances have come to characterize the dressing pattern of many youths in Nigeria. This phenomenon, characterized by provocative clothing choices, skimpy and tight-fitting dresses, most of them transparent; revealing certain parts of the bodies that under normal dressing pattern ought to be hidden away from the glare of people and the sharing of revealing images on social media, raises important questions about social norms, self-expression, and the impact of Religion on young people's behavior. Hence this research work is designed to critically examine the culture of indecent dressing and nudity among contemporary youths. The research methodology adopted in this study was the analytical and descriptive method. In order to ascertain reliable data, various methods of data collection were employed such as books (published and unpublished), Library Journals, Dictionaries and Wikipedia were used in course of the study. This research work discovered the following: indecent dressing and nudity is a social menace that has eaten deep into the fabric of the contemporary youths, the causative factors of indecent dressing among youths includes; social media, celebrity influence, it was also revealed that this ill behaviour has birthed some other social crimes like rape and sexual assaults. This research work recommended public awareness of the dangers of indecent dressing and nudity among youths as a way of curbing it.
