ABSTRACT

This study examined the theme of freedom of expression in Abubakar Adam Ibrahim's Season of Crimson Blossoms. By examining this theme, the study focused on the constraints against freedom of expression, and the implication of violating freedom of expression. This was aimed at providing a deeper understanding on the role of literature in promoting the right to freedom of expression. The study adopted Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytical criticism in analysing this theme using relevant excerpts drawn from Ibrahim's Season of Crimson Blossoms. The study found that Hajiya Binta Zubairu’s illicit affair with Reza was as a result of the religious and cultural constraints placed on her freedom of expression. Also, the restriction placed on female characters’ personal and sexual freedom in the novel, resulted in how women's voices can be repressed. The study showed how disconnection and death serve as the implications of violating freedom of expression in Ibrahim's Season of Crimson Blossoms. Both implications have positive and negative impacts on the individual and the society. The study further demonstrated the role of literature in promoting freedom of expression using Ibrahim's Season of Crimson Blossoms. Using the character of Hadiza, Ibrahim has shown that traditions that contribute to some social vices in the society should be corrected. The study concluded that people should be cautious of any tradition and law they make because it has psychological effects on people, who are sometimes victims of this circumstances.
