ABSTRACT
The study is a quantitative study on the relationship that exists between formal education and skill acquisition among students of University of Benin, Benin City. Formal education refers to that aspect of the educational system that has to do with the academic curricula-dominated medium of knowledge dissemination which is mostly characterized by examinations and test. Skills acquisition on the other hand has to do with the practical acquisition of skills or techniques peculiar to a particular practice, mostly outside the formal setting. The reasons for individuals choosing to be formally educated only or focusing only on acquiring vocational skills acquisition, or doing both, are different. Thus, the objectives of this study include to assess University of Benin students’ interest in acquiring vocational skills, how they commercialize their skills along with academic work. It also analysed the success rate of past trainings within the institution as well as gave respondents opportunity to suggest strategies that could influence more acquisition of vocational skills by students. The study adopted the survey research design method in other to enable the gathering of data directly from the students in their natural environment. The sample size of the study was made up of 155 respondents for the quantitative data generation through the use of semi-structured questionnaires. The systematic random sampling and the simple random sampling techniques with manual lottery method was used for the purpose of this study. The quantitative data was analyzed. However, the findings of the study revealed that not only were University of Benin interested in acquiring vocational skill, those who had were able to balance it well with their academic engagements while revealing that few skill acquisition centers existed within University of Benin.
The study also provided recommendable solutions on how to influence students’ participation in vocational skill acquisition.
