ABSTRACT
In the 21st Century, the means and methods through which criminals commit crimes have become increasingly sophisticated. This has created a corresponding need for the response to crime to become more sophisticated too and employ different scientific means to rid the society of the menace of crime. Several jurisdictions have responded promptly and decisively to this need by exploring the options available in the use of forensic science methods, but Nigeria still dithers between exploring this option fully or just testing the waters by employing them in small doses. The aim of this study was to appraise the adequacy of the present legal responses to crime in Nigeria and juxtapose them with the existing legal responses in other jurisdictions.
This study appraised the legal responses to crime in Nigeria. It began by x-raying the legislative framework for responding to crime with scientific methods in Nigeria, then it discussed whether these provisions are adequate to empower law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to employ forensic science methods. Next it examined legal responses in some selected jurisdictions for the purposes of determining the gaps in the Nigeria legislations and proposing reform.
This study concluded that the present legal responses to crime in Nigeria are inadequate in resolving the increasingly sophisticated crimes in Nigeria and proposed a response that enables the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to deploy forensic science methods and receive the much needed training in these methods which will equip them to perform their duties efficiently.
