ABSTRACT

This study critically analyzes the nexus between foreign aid and underdevelopment within the context of Nigeria, focusing specifically on the period of the Buhari administration from 2015 to 2023. With Nigeria being one of the largest recipients of foreign aid in Africa, the efficacy of such aid in fostering development has been a subject of contention. Through a comprehensive review of literature and empirical data, this research examines the various dimensions of foreign aid, including its economic, political, and social implications on Nigeria's development trajectory.

The study employs a qualitative approach, drawing insights from governmental policies, economic indicators, and scholarly discourse to assess the impact of foreign aid under the Buhari administration. It scrutinizes the efficacy of aid utilization, addressing issues of transparency, accountability, and governance, which are crucial determinants of development outcomes. Furthermore, the research evaluates the extent to which foreign aid has contributed to addressing systemic challenges such as poverty, inequality, and infrastructure deficit in Nigeria.

By adopting a critical lens, this study aims to unravel the complexities surrounding foreign aid and underdevelopment in Nigeria, offering insights into the policy implications and recommendations for future governance. Through a nuanced analysis of the Buhari administration's approach to foreign aid management, this research contributes to the broader discourse on development assistance and governance in Nigeria, providing valuable lessons for policymakers, academics, and development practitioners.
