ABSTRACT
This essay has explored folkloric elements and their relevance in Ukala;s The Slave Wife and Odia’s Venom of Vengeance. It has focused on the dramatic significance of the elements. Three folklore elements permeate and dominate in the two plays. They are folksongs, proverbs and ritual performance combined with magical and witchcraft powers. These elements are examined to assess their contributions to the plays. Folksongs, for example, contribute to the plot development in the plays. They help in moulding the text as the organize the conflict, suspense and surprise elements of plot. Also, the folk songs show how they initiate conflict and also contribute to their resolution. Following the above is that, folksongs help to reinforce themes in the chosen plays. Themes of patriotism, courage and resilience are developed through proverbs in Venom. As for Wife, the playwright depicts the theme of honour through folk songs
