ABSTRACT
Flood is an extreme weather event naturally caused by rising global temperature which results in heavy rainfall. However, changing rainfall interfaced with anthropogenic factors such as non expansion of drainage network, obstruction of drainage and poor land use control are responsible for increasing incidence of flood hazards in Egor Local Government Area. The purpose of this study is to identify flood prone areas, it impact on the residents and the coping strategies employed by residents. In executing this study area, a total of one hundred and eighty-eight (188) copies of a well structured questionnaire; interview and direct field observation were used to collect data on the causal factors and impacts of flooding in Egor Local Government Area. Four flood prone areas in Egor Local Government Area were selected for this study using a multistage-cluster sampling method. They are Adolor, Ogida, Tomline, and Uwelu. Descriptive method was employed in this study. It was revealed that flood has caused the displacement of people in this area and also increased the spread of disease such as malaria. The study also revealed that the coping strategies employed by the residents are less effective. This study therefore recommends that proper construction of deep drainages should be done and environmental sanitation should be taken seriously.
