ABSTRACT

Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Nigeria's cultural diversity and youthful dynamism, the practice of finger nail painting has emerged as a canvas of self-expression and creativity. This project delves into the intricate world of nail art within the contemporary Nigerian context, focusing on the captivating narratives woven within the University of Benin campus. As the brushstrokes of nail polish transcend mere adornment, they unravel a deeper narrative of cultural significance, social influences, and individual identity. Embarking on an expedition through the corridors of time, this study casts a retrospective glance at the historical roots of nail painting art, contextualizing its evolution within the Nigerian milieu. In a country where nail painting does not possess a specific ancient heritage, the project illuminates the gradual emergence of nail art as a modern art form, delicately interwoven with cultural threads of diversity. With a balanced blend of qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, the project captures the pulse of contemporary Nigerian youth, exploring their motivations, inspirations, and perceptions driving their nail art choices. The symbiotic dance between traditional aesthetics and global trends unfolds as a narrative of cultural fusion, where nails transform into canvases portraying narratives of heritage and modernity. The study unravels the dynamic tapestry of nail art's journey within Nigeria, illuminating the pioneering spirit that defies challenges. Amidst a backdrop of limited formal education in nail care, the project reveals the resilience of the industry's pioneers in creating avenues for skill development and empowerment. As The Nail Studio emerges as a beacon of innovation, its journey from humble beginnings to a pioneering nail technician school speaks of the transformative power of passion and perseverance.

The significance of this research extends beyond aesthetics, delving into the cultural, social, and personal narratives that harmoniously converge on these tiny canvases.
