ABSTRACT

In this study, we embarked on a comprehensive journey through the historical development and socio-economic impact of FESTAC '77 on the city of Lagos. Our aim was to shed light on the enduring legacy of this monumental cultural event and its contemporary relevance in shaping the cultural landscape of Lagos. This comprehensive study on the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC '77) in Lagos made several significant contributions to filling gaps in existing literature and knowledge. Through its in-depth examination of FESTAC's multidimensional legacies, the research illuminated the pivotal role this unprecedented pan-African cultural celebration played in causing the revitalization, promotion, and sustainable development of African arts and heritage. First session provides an introduction to the background to the study, stating the relevance of this study, with its aim and objectives, justification of this research, the methodology used in carrying out this research, the scope of the research and various literature reviewed in relation to this study. The research began by tracing the origins and visionary planning behind FESTAC Town as an innovative residential district envisioned to accommodate participants and serve as an enduring cultural hub beyond FESTAC '77. Its pioneering Afrocentric design principles drew from diverse indigenous African architectural aesthetics and spatial philosophies. However, its creation also facilitated investments in 87 modern infrastructure and amenities. Constructing FESTAC Town spurred major infrastructural projects that transformed the area, including transportation networks, utilities upgrades, commercial spaces and business hubs. The impetus of developing housing and facilities for the global festival attracted investment that spurred economic growth. FESTAC's cultural institutions and artisan villages also cultivated creative entrepreneurship.
