ABSTRACT

This was a review carried out determine fertilizer response on Horticultural crops within 2001-2020, and it spanned across the various ecological zones of Nigeria. The reviewed horticultural crops were: jute, pineapple, amaranth, pumpkin, pepper, garden egg plants, soursop and okra. It was observed that these crops received more research attention than other horticultural crops, while others were fairly reported upon through research. The findings were done in several Research Institute to ascertain the different fertilizer responses to Horticultural crops. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) for all measurements were performed using GenStat version 12 software package. The results showed that application of organo-mineral and inorganic fertilizer and their combination significantly (P<0.05) influenced the growth and yield of Horticultural crops. In all the trials, the inorganic fertilizers received more research attention than the organic, with NPK featuring more prominently. For jute, it was noted from the result of the study that using a combination of NPK fertilizer and organo-mineral fertilizer improved the growth attributes of jute and hence the characters which are desired by consumers. For amanranth and pumpkin, the study suggested that for the cultivation of fluted pumpkin and amanranth in an ultisol, a combination of 600kg/ha of NPK fertilizer + 2t/ha of poultry manure may be used. Also considering the economic implication in sourcing inorganic fertilizer and the effect on environment, decreasing rate of application to 200kg/ha of NPK fertilizer + 2t/ha of poultry manure is recommended for flute pumpkin and amaranth production.
