ABSTRACT
This study delves into the profound relationship between drama and society, positing that drama serves as a reflection of societal realities. It explores how various aspects of life, including tragic, comedic, and satirical events, find expression through the medium of drama. Each work of dramatic art is intrinsically tied to the societal events it portrays. This research is dedicated to elucidating the multifaceted functions of drama within society, with a particular focus on how it mirrors and contributes to societal discourse. Femi Osofisan's play, MIDNIGHT HOTEL serves as a prime exemplar in this examination. The historical existence of drama spans generations, persistently fulfilling its societal role. Femi Osofisan, a playwright renowned for his acute social awareness and adept portrayal of societal dynamics, exemplifies the idea that "the story is more important than the storyteller." This adage underscores the centrality of storytelling in uniting historical and legendary events within society. This study's findings underscore drama as a potent instrument for societal rejuvenation and the revelation of truths. It highlights that playwrights are products of their societal milieu, and Femi Osofisan emerges not merely as a writer but as a reformist who adeptly translates societal events into dramatic narratives. His play, MIDNIGHT HOTEL serves as a poignant critique of the moral decay, corruption, and social and political decadence prevalent in Nigerian society. Furthermore, the study emphasizes that dramatists perceive theatre as a compelling platform for both artistic expression and social commentary. Theatre engages audiences on intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic levels, fostering shared experiences that stimulate contemplation, empathy, and potential catalysts for change.
