Abstract
Background: Female sexual well-being is a crucial aspect of overall health, exerting profound influences on individual satisfaction, interpersonal relationships, and mental health. The incidence of Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) is fundamental in comprehending its profound impact on the lives of women.
Objectives: The study assessed the significant contributing factors of female sexual dysfunction among study participants as well as the relationship between demographic factors and sexual function.
Methods: The study, conducted in Ugbowo, Benin City, utilized a cross-sectional design to assess Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) among sexually active adult females. Convenient sampling was carried out and a sample size of 374 was obtained. Data collected through questionnaires were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2016, employing descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: The study sample of 500 participants exhibited diverse demographics: 43.8% were aged 18-25, 25.4% were aged 36-45. Students comprised 36.4%, while self-employed individuals represented 21.0% of the sample. In terms of income, 31.2% earned between 51,000 and 100,000 Naira. Moreover, 95.8% had attained tertiary education, and 47.0% were married. These findings underscore a broad representation across age groups, occupations, income levels, educational backgrounds, and marital statuses within the study population, offering valuable insights into the multifaceted sociodemographic factors potentially influencing female sexual function. The mean values for the categories in the sexual function score ranged from are 0.747-1.6812, Among these, desire had the highest mean value followed by satisfaction 1.1549.
Conclusion:Sexual well-being is influenced to varied degrees by age, occupation, marital status, and education; desire and fulfillment stand out as essential elements. In order to address female sexual dysfunction, it is essential to address the psychological, relational, and physical components that contribute to dissatisfaction.
