ABSTRACT

Picralima nitida is a therapeutic herb used in ethnomedicine for the management of several disease conditions. It has varied applications in African folk medicine. This research examined the effect of the aqueous unripe fruit pulp of picralima nitida on the feed intake, fecal output, organ and body weight of rats. Healthy adult male wistar rats were obtained and acclimatized for 14 days and was fed with pellets. Afterwards the rats were divided into different groups (120 - 180g) for different phases of the experiment in clean plastic cages and the feed intake of the rats was calculated daily, the fecal output and the body weight was measured once weekly. Phase I of the experiment was the acute toxicity which had 4 groups with 3 rats in each group, given a dose of 10mg, 100mg and 1000mg/kg body weight respectively. Phase II is the LD50 which had 4 groups with 1 rat per group, given 1600mg, 2900mg, and 5000mg/kg body weight respectively. While the last phase, phase III is the subchronic toxicity which had 6 groups with 5 rats per group, given 200mg, 500mg, 1000mg, 2000mg, and 3000mg/kg body weight respectively. The results showed that the aqueous fruit pulp of unripe picralima nitida had no adverse effects or significant alteration on the feed intake, fecal output, body and organ weight of the experimental rats. The feed intake of the rats was increased, the fecal output was normal, the body weight of the experimental rats increased.
