ABSTRACT

This study investigates the feasibility of implementing artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the development and utilization of prosthetic limbs in Nigeria. The goal is to assess the potential benefits, challenges, and current state of research in this area. By conducting a comprehensive literature review, this study offers insights into the feasibility of AI/IoT-based prosthetic limbs in Nigeria and proposes future research directions. The findings reveal that AI/IoT-based prosthetic limbs offer enhanced functionality, improved user experience, real-time data monitoring, adaptive control mechanisms, and connectivity with other devices and healthcare providers. These technologies have the potential to significantly enhance mobility, dexterity, and overall quality of life for individuals with limb loss. However, challenges such as high initial costs, limited access to advanced healthcare facilities, inadequate technical infrastructure, and the need for specialized training pose barriers to implementation. Cultural acceptance, social stigma, and ethical considerations surrounding AI in healthcare also need to be addressed. The current state of research in Nigeria is still in its early stages, necessitating further feasibility studies. Recommendations for future research include conducting studies in the local context, considering cost-effectiveness and cultural appropriateness, and establishing training and support systems. Collaboration among researchers, healthcare providers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders is crucial for successful implementation. Overall, this study underscores the feasibility of AI/IoT-based prosthetic limbs in Nigeria, but further research and investment are needed to develop affordable and contextually appropriate solutions that can be integrated into the healthcare system, thereby benefiting individuals with limb loss in the country.
