SUMMARY
This study has examined the various causes of conflict between farmers and herders, such as unavailability of grazing lands hence prompting the herders to struggle for grazing land with local farmers also illegal invasion of farmland and destruction of crops by cattle’s particularly during the planting season. The study examined the history of the Obiaruku people it looks at the various accounts of their migration it examined the geography,political system,religious and economic activities of the people Obiaruku people that is mostly influenced by their geographical location.
The study also examines the relationship between farmers and herders before the conflict as it has always been cordial although there have been several cases occasions where farmers have had disputes and disagreements but such misunderstanding were resolved amicably between the two groups as it never resulted to any form of physical conflict however, in 2021 this conflict began taken a destructive nature as herders began killing farmers who were either working on their farms or coming back from their farms , raping and killing women this made their lives very difficult as they lost their means of livelihood being that Obiaruku people are predominantly farmers.Due to the incessant killings by the herders, the farms were scared to go to their farms in order not to be killed this affected the whole community as not just farmers were being killed but traders resident and several indigenes were killed . In order to curb the menace several vigilante groups were organized youths came together to fight of this herders but all efforts were not enough as to the herders were said to have sophisticated weapons.
