FAMILY INSTABILITY IMPLICATIONS ON CHILD UPBRINGING IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The research investigates family instability and its implications on child upbringing in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To carry out the study four research questions were raised, which include; what are the causes of family instability among married couples in Egor Local Government Area, What are the effects of family instability on upbringing of children in Egor Local Government Area, What are the solutions to family instability in Egor Local Government Area and what are the cultural characteristics of family instability in Egor Local Government Area.The study adopted survey research design and the population of the study comprised of 100 families drawn from Egor Local Government Area. The instrument used to gather information was a structured questionnaires which is a likert scale based on a four-point of SA, A, D, and SD. Data was analyzed using simple percentage, frequency count, mean and standard deviation. Based on the findings, the following conclusion were drawn, that family instability is mainly cause by lack of money to pay bills, to buy food stuff, unemployment and poor communication among couples. In addition, Cultural norms and values impact family lifestyles. The following recommendations were suggested; That Couples should have good job they are doing in order to take care of their families. Both Couples are expected to be working class or having business/trade to meet with challenges of the economy in hard times like this. Couples are expected to have constant communication among themselves and they should love and care for themselves. Couples should always take care of children properly so that they will not face sexual abuse, physical abuse, and develop mental challenges and couples should practice forgiveness if any offense arises, and this will lead to marriage stability.
