ABSTRACT

The study investigated the characteristics as family correlates of preschool children cognitive development in Oredo LGA, Benin City, Edo State. To guide the study give research questions was raised. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population was made up of all ECCD teachers within Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo state. The sample size was 60 teachers selected from 10 schools through purposive sampling techniques. The instrument used to collect the data was questionnaire. The instrument was validated by three lecturers in the Institute of Education. The reliability index of 0.81 was obtained. The study revealed that the study investigated the impact of socio-economic status (SES) of families within Oredo LGA correlates with preschoolers cognitive development. Additionally, the study revealed that the study revealed that prevalent parenting styles within families in Oredo LGA are authoritative parenting, permissive parenting, neglectful parenting and authoritarian parenting and this parenting styles positively impact the cognitive domain such as problem-solving and decision-making skills in preschool-aged children. Based on the forgoing, it was recommended that Parents should be educated about the critical role of family dynamics, including socio-economic status, parenting styles, and cultural influences, in shaping children's cognitive development is essential. Parents should engage in positive, supportive interactions with their children. Emphasize the importance of responsive care giving, active listening, and meaningful conversations that promote language development and critical thinking skills in preschoolers.
