ABSTRACT
Nigeria as a nation has abundant natural surface water and ground water resources (Abaje et al., 2009). Many of the country’s lakes, rivers and streams receive waste water discharges that create enormous environmental and public health problems (okoye,2005).
The concept of sustainability was aimed at providing rural communities with clean water but no evidence is actually available till date to show that rural areas now have adequate water supply. Coliform bacteria are a collection of relatively harmless microorganisms that live in large numbers in the intestines of humans and warm and cold blooded animals. The presence of faecal coliform bacterias in aquatic environment indicates that the water has been contaminated with the faecal materials of humans or other animals.
Untreated sewage discharge into water bodies can have effect on biodiversity of freshwater such as changes in the aquatic habitat, species composition and decrease in biodiversity.
