ABSTRACT

The study investigated the factors responsible for poor academic performance among junior secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation. The findings from the study include that lack of instructional materials constitute a factor responsible for poor academic performance among junior secondary school students. It was concluded that overcrowded classrooms, lack of teachers’ motivation, lack of instructional materials and lack of subject mastery by students all constitute a factors responsible for poor academic performance among junior secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The study among others recommended that there should be effective collaboration between government and all educational stakeholders towards ensuring there is enough provision and availability of instructional materials for teaching and viii learning activities. This will help boost the level of students’ academic performance.
