ABSTRACT
This study was aimed at ascertaining factors affecting the non – adherence of hypertensive patients to treatment regimen. A case study of hypertensive patients in UBTH. In order to achieve the intended objectives of the study, 10 research question was raised and one hundred and fouty (140) respondents drawn from University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State were used.
The design used for the study was the descriptive survey research design. A self-constructed questionnaire was the equipment used for data collection. The instrument was validated using expert approach. The Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test for the reliability of the instrument, and a reliability coefficient of 0.78 was gotten which showed that the instrument was reliable. Data collected was analyzed using frequency and simple percentage.
The findings of the research revealed that not following treatment due to the side effect of the drugs, unavailability of money to purchase drugs, unavailability of people to get drugs when prescription is finished, too many prescriptions, lack of symptoms are the major factors responsible for non-adherence of hypertensive patients to treatment regimen. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher makes the following recommendations patients should endeavor to take their prescription, whether the feel symptoms or not, as long as it is still within the prescription period, patients should take all dosage prescribed by the doctor, no matter the quantity of the dosage, other methods of treatment should be discovered, to facilitate the progress rate of managing hypertension.
