ABSTRACT
The study investigated the factors motivating adult learner's participation in adult education programmes in Benin Metropolis. To therefore achieve the objectives of the study, five research questions were raised to guide the study.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of seven hundred and fifty (750) adult learners enrolled in adult education programme in five (5) literacy centres in Benin metropolis. 100 adult learners from the population were used as the sample size. The participants were selected using the simple random sampling technique. The study adopted the questionnaire as instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by lecturers in the Department and was tested for reliability through the test re-test procedure. After computing the data using the Pearson's Product Moment Correlation formula, a reliability index of 0.71 was obtained. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage.
After analysis, the study revealed that the need for self-improvement and skills development the need for Social interaction, the need to improve on their personal life and the need to improve on their economic situation are factors which motivate adult learners to participate in adult education programmes in Benin Metropolis. Based on the findings of the study it was concluded that there are adult education programmes aimed at promoting social change in Oredo local government area of Edo State. The study further recommended that adult learners should be sensitized on the need for adult education and they should be motivated to enroll in them so that illiteracy and ignorance will be stamped out thereby enhancing meaningful development and adequate awareness should be encouraged, especially in the rural areas so that more adult learners can participate effectively in adult education programmes. The study also recommended that the government should pay more attention to the area of adult education by setting up more adult education centres and providing adequate funds so the goals of adult education can be realized.
