ABSTRACT

This study assessed factors influencing the uptake of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine among female undergraduate nursing and medical students at the University of Benin, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, and data were collected using structured questionnaires. Findings revealed that while 89% of respondents demonstrated high knowledge about HPV and its vaccine, only 27% reported being vaccinated. Major barriers to vaccine uptake included cost, lack of awareness, cultural and religious beliefs, and limited access. Despite no significant relationship between knowledge and vaccine uptake (p = 0.197), the findings underscore the need for multifaceted interventions, such as subsidized vaccines, awareness campaigns, and institutional support, to improve vaccination rates. This study emphasizes the critical role of healthcare professionals and public health policies in addressing barriers and advocating for HPV vaccination to reduce the burden of HPV-related diseases.
