ABSTRACT
History is an important school subject which conveys invaluable lessons from the past and whose worth transcends regional, national and cultural boundaries. However, effective teaching of history in secondary schools had long been blighted by problems and issues have consequently resulted in the study of the process of teaching of history in secondary schools in a selected local government area. Examined “factors affecting the teaching of history in secondary schools in Ika South Local Government Area of State State”. The descriptive survey design was used for the study and data was collected using the self-structured questionnaire. The result and data gotten were analyzed using simple arithmetic procedure. A sample size of 150 individuals was used, which comprised of teachers. The study found out that factors such as lack of use of instructional materials, lack of qualified professional History teachers to teach history, the lack of correlation of history with other subjects, religious bias/sentiments attached to the teaching of history, emergence of new subjects, lack of managerial support, complexity of history subjects, the use of technology, institutional libraries and teachers resource centres, scanty knowledge of history, national bias, faulty method of teaching, are the major factors plaguing the teaching of history in secondary schools. It was therefore recommended that the subject should be placed on the right pedestal by the appropriate quarters hence improving societal perception and commitment to teaching. There should be more awareness and enlightenment on the appropriateness and advantages of teaching history, the state and federal government should invest more time and money in providing history materials, classes and teaching aids for secondary schools. The teachers should always be resourceful and versatile to the students and endeavour to use teaching methods that keep students’ interest alive, amongst other factors.
