ABSTRACT
This study investigated the factors influencing the performance of athletes with disabilities in Edo State sports commission. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study.The questions bothered on the factors influencing the performance of athletes with disabilities. These research questions were raised in this study.
Survey research design was adopted for the study.The population of this study comprised all athletes with disabilities in Edo State Sports Commission. As at the time of conducting this study, available records in Edo State Sports Commission showed that there were 96 registered athletes with disabilities in the commission. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. The instrument was titled “factors influencing the performance of athletes with disabilities in Edo State sports commission”. The research instrument was validated by the supervisor and two lecturers in the department of Human Kinetics and Sport Science. The Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient was used to establish the reliability of the instrument which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.75. Data was collected and analyzed using frequency and percentages.
The findings of the study revealed that sports facilities and equipment, motivation, stigmatization as well as transportation are factors influencing the performance of athletes with disabilities. It was thereforeconcluded that each of these factors play an important role in determining the performance level of athletes with disabilities. In line with the findings, it was recommended that Edo State government should provide adequate sports facilities and equipment so as to help athletes with disabilities improve their performance in sports.
