ABSTRACT
This study investigates the factors influencing the effective teaching of Biology in Secondary Schools in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State. In order to carry out this research, three (3) research Questions were raised.
The research design used was a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was all secondary school 1 biology students in Ovia North Local Government Area. The Sample size of the study was 10 schools (5 public and 5 private) and 100 Secondary School 1 students that were selected using the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was the secondary school 1 students' Questionnaire, which was validated by the supervisor and two other experts in the department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The reliability of the Instrument was tested by administering 25 copies on respondents who were excluded from the main study sample and reliability coefficient of 0.85 was obtained which shows that the instrument was reliable. The questionnaire as administered by the researcher to the respondents, instructions was given to the respondents on how to fill the questionnaire and the questionnaire was retrieved immediately after the responses have been obtained. The data was analyzed using the Mean and deviation.
The study revealed that there are certain factors that influences the effective teaching of Biology in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State. And there are possible solutions to the negative factors influencing the effective teaching of Biology in schools and some of these factors differs by school type.
It was concluded that some of the factors influencing the effective teaching of Biology differ by school type.
It was recommended that the Government provides avenues for programs to enlighten biology teachers, a well updated curriculum, fund public schools to have practical equipment and enough infrastructures and enough time should be allotted for biology instruction as this will curb the negative factors influencing the effective teaching of Biology.
