ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to examine the factors influencing the choice of the English language as a course of study among undergraduate students at the University of Benin.

The research design employed was the descriptive research design. The population of the study consisted of student residents in the hostels, at the University of Benin. The population of students are 6,933. The sample of 150 students was selected through the convenience sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire which was validated and certified before administration. The data gathered was analysed using descriptive statistics.

The result of the study showed that inefficient teachers who were ill-prepared, under qualified, and poorly taught to teach the topic are limiting factors, which is counterproductive in principle given that they are the primary factor influencing students' performance. The study concludes that teacher quality has an impact on students' English proficiency in light of its findings. Other factors covered in the study were infrastructure, teaching resources, and student attitudes. More emphasis should be placed on the study of the English language and what it can contribute to society in terms of improving work performance, employment opportunities, and career growth by government and private companies. Lecturers who are more qualified to teach the English language should be employed and attracted by the school administration to help improve students' performance.
