FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ATTITUDE OF STUDENT NURSES TOWARDS CARING FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS IN A TERTIARY HEALTH INSTITUTE IN BENIN CITY

ABSTACT

HIV is a severe problem in the world.in recent years, HIV/AIDS has become one of the most important public health problem. The right of people living with HIV/AIDS often has been violated because of their HIV status causing them to suffer both the burden of the disease and loss of social and health care rights. Stigma on PLWHA hinders the process of socialization and even treatment because it makes them feel isolated and even considered as people who are insulted by their status as PLWHA). Despite student nurses being exposed to different teaching and learning experiences, many of them still believe that HIV/AIDS make nursing a high-risk profession. The aim of this study is to identify the factors influencing the attitude of student Nurses towards care for people living with HIV/ALDS a tertiary health institute in Benin city. A descriptive survey was employed in this study and a proportionate sample was applied for each level before a simple random technique was used. Data was collected using a well-structured and validated questionnaire which had a reliability of 0.7. Data collected was analyzed statistically using SPSS (version 24.0) software and was presented in tables and pie chart. The findings reveal that the major factors influencing their attitude are fear of contracting the disease with a mean of (3.31), social stigma and discrimination attached to people living with HIV/AIDS (3.14), level of clinical experience (3.11), perceived infection risk at work (3.20), Lack of information and training programme on how to care for people living with HIV/AIDS (3.06) while the least factor is fear of having to leave nursing school if one contracts the disease (2.65). In conclusion the result shows majority of the respondent have good knowledge and positive attitude. in spite of this some factors are likely to affect this attitude that will hinder their care towards people living with HIV/AIDS. Hypotheses tested shows that there was no significant relationship between students’ knowledge and attitude. But there is need for government and multinational agencies to support student nurses to provide better quality of care to people with HIV/AIDS by constant training and retraining.
