ABSTRACT
The study focused on the factors that influences students attitudes towards the utilization of library facilities in academic libraries. Specifically, the study aims to: to examine the concept of library facilities, to examine the extent to which students utilizes John Harris library facilities, identify the factors that influence students’ attitude and utilization of in John Harris library facilities, determine the challenges that prevent students from fully utilizing John Harris library facilities, develop strategies that improve student attitude and utilization of library facilities.
The study adopted the use of descriptive survey research design, A total sample of ninety three (302) students from library and information science department, University of Benin, was adopted. The obtained data were analysed using frequency counts, simple percentages, mean and standard deviation. Questionnaire titled ”factors that influences students attitudes towards the utilization of library facilities in academic libraries” were drawn and administered, one hundred and forty nine(149) copies were retrieved from the respondents and found worthy of use.
The study findings revealed that students actively utilize John Harris Library facilities, with electronic databases and workshops or training sessions being the most frequently used resources. Students show a strong preference for digital resources such as JSTOR, ProQuest, and ScienceDirect, which are accessed regularly for academic purposes. The study also identified key factors influencing students' attitudes toward using library facilities. Additionally, a user-friendly library website that provides easy access to online resources and the availability of adequate digital tools and technologies were highlighted as factors that positively influence student engagement with the library. Despite the high level of utilization, students face several challenges when using John Harris Library facilities. Remote access difficulties, poor network connectivity, and insufficient training on effectively using library resources were among the most significant barriers identified. following recommendations were given in light of this study, Upgrade library furniture, lighting, and general infrastructure to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for all users, Ensure the digital collection is regularly updated to meet the academic needs of students, Organize regular workshops and training sessions to improve students' information literacy and skills in utilizing library resources effectively, Address issues with poor network connectivity by investing in high-speed internet and reliable IT systems to facilitate seamless access to digital resources.
