FACTORS INFLUENCING STUDENTS' ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT 

This research study examines the factors influencing students academic performance in public secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Factors such as the classroom environment, school resources and teaching learning method were examined which helped us to know how they influence student academic performance . Four research questions were raised which include; what are the factors that mostly influence student academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State? Does classroom environment has influence on students academic performance Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State? Does availability of school resources affect students academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State? Does teaching learning method have influence on student academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State? The target population of the study consist of six thousand five hundred and thirty four (6534) students both junior and senior secondary schools ,with sample of 2% of the population, amounted to a sample size of 131. Seven(7) public schools was selected from the Oredo Local Government using the simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire and checklist was used for data collection. The questionnaire and checklist was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Management; while the test- re test reliability method was adopted to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. The result was analysed using frequency count, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Based on the findings it was discovered that physical school environment have great influence on student academic performance. It was therefore recommended were made like the provision of a conducive learning environment which help improve student academic performance. There should be availability of school resources such as material resources, physical facilities, and human resources which would make student perform better. The teaching method employed by the teachers should be able to stimulate learning in the students as this will help to improve the performance of the students.
