ABSTRACT
The study investigated the factors affecting the academic performance of secondary school students in English in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the aim of the study, four research questions were asked and answered.
The research used in this study is a descriptive study. The population of this study consisted of all 26 English teachers in 13 public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample of the study consisted of all 26 English teachers in 13 public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
The results of the study include that teachers' subject mastery significantly affects students' academic performance in English. It was found that teaching methods of teachers, use of teaching materials, physical layout of the school and teaching knowledge affected the academic performance of students in Edo State High Schools in Egor Municipality in English. state Therefore, it was recommended, among other things, that the federal government should implement continuous professional development for English language teachers that focuses on innovative and student-centered teaching methods..
