ABSTRACT

One of the major causes of medical malpractice is miscommunication or absence of communication as a whole. Being aware of the different factors that influence nurse-patient communication will help in reducing low patient outcome. The aim of the study was to identify the nurse-related, patient-related and environmental factors that influence nurse-patient communication in University of Benin teaching hospital. The study was based on a cross sectional research design and was conducted using separate self-administered questionnaires for nurses and patients. In total 140 respondents were surveyed, with 80 being nurse and 60 patients. The respondents stated that noise was a factor that influenced communication (82.5% patients & 51.7% nurses). From empirical and statistical background, it is the conclusion of the study that both nurses and patients have a role to play to ensure effective communication. The study also concluded by stating that training can be implemented to inform nurses about the communication challenges, to equip them with effective communication skills.
