ABSTRACT
This study examined the factors influencing illness behaviour among undergraduate nursing students in University of Benin. It employed a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. A sample size of two hundred and forty nine (249) nursing students in the University of Benin were sampled for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used in the data collection. A self-structured questionnaire was the instrument for data collection structed into section on sociodemographic characteristics of the nurses and other sections to answer to the research questions raised. The instrument was tested for validity and reliability. Ethical approval was collected from the Health Research Ethics Committee of the College of Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Benin City. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to describe the data, while Chi-square was used in testing the research hypotheses.The result from the study shows that distance to health care facility, knowledge of previous treatments plan of the illness, waiting time to seeing doctor, cost of medications, familiarity with symptoms, and profession were found to be factors significantly associated with illness behavior. The study recommends that government should thoroughly enforce the national health insurance scheme in Nigeria.
