ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the level of participation and various factors influencing the participation of human kinetics and sport science students in sporting activities and seek the. It seeks to provide insights into the underlying motivations and barriers that impact their engagement in sports, contributing to a better understanding of how to promote physical activity within this student population. A descriptive survey research method was employed in this study. With a population consisting of human kinetics and sport science students from 200Level to 400Level. A random sampling technique was used to select the sample. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire, and the instrument's validity was established through the supervisor and two other lecturers in the department. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics of mean, frequency and standard deviation. The study's major findings revealed that intrinsic motivation, such as a personal interest in sports, played a significant role in driving participation among these students. Conversely, factors like time constraints, academic pressures, and lack of access to sports facilities acted as barriers to their engagement. To promote increased participation in sports, it is recommended that universities and institutions develop strategies to enhance access to sports facilities, offer flexible schedules, and create opportunities for sports-related extracurricular activities. These findings provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and institutions seeking to foster a culture of physical activity among human kinetics and sport science students.
