ABSTRACT

Hand hygiene is a fundamental practice for preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors influencing hand hygiene compliance among undergraduate students in University of Benin. A school-based descriptive case study research design involving a total number of 100 students was used for this study. Multi-stage sampling technique was employed and data collection was done through self administered, semi-structured questionnaire. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and data presented in frequency tables. The findings of the study revealed that while students generally possessed adequate knowledge about the importance of hand hygiene, there were discrepancies in compliance rates The results showed that factors such as time constraints, availability and accessibility of handwashing facilities, and social norms were identified as significant influencers of compliance. Attitudes and personal motivations also played a crucial role in shaping students' hand hygiene behavior. It was recommended that schools need for targeted educational campaigns and improved infrastructure to promote hand hygiene compliance among undergraduate students. By understanding the multifaceted nature of these influencing factors, the University of Benin and similar institutions can develop more effective strategies to hand hygiene practices, ultimately contributing to a healthier campus community and reducing the risk of disease transmission.
