FACTORS INFLUENCING FEMALE STUDENTS' PARTICIPATION IN SPORTS AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research work was to look into the factors affecting female students' participation in sports and physical activities in the University of Benin.

The research employed the descriptive survey research and the population of the study comprises of the female students in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sport Science, Faculty of Education, University of Benin in Edo State. The population was 240 females students which was gotten from the four levels of the department. The number of female students sampled out of the population was hundred (100) female students from the four levels of the Department of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Education, University of Benin in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Twenty-four (24) students were selected from 100 and 200 level and twenty-six (26) students from 300 and 400 level making a total of hundred students (100). The main instrument for the study was the self-structured questionnaire. These respondents were selected by using the simple random sampling technique. The research instrument used for the study was a self-structured questionnaire made up of two parts; part A demographic information of the respondents while part B sought to elicit information on factors affecting female students' participation in sports in the University of Benin. The reliability of the instrument was tested using the test re-test method of reliability. The data gotten was analyzed using the simple percentage and frequency counts.

The analysis of data obtained revealed that biological factors, religious influence, cultural influence, the type of sporting activity all influence participation of female students in sports. Based on these findings, recommendations were made one of which is that proper orientation programs should be  carried out across tertiary institutions across Nigeria, there should be flexible timetable, which allows students to participate fully in sport related activity within  the school community.
