ABSTRACT

The study explored factors influencing of excessive intake of alcohol and drugs amongst students of the University of Benin, to make it possible four research questions were poised and the purpose of this study were raised to investigate the factors influencing excessive intake of alcohol and drugs amongst students in the University of Benin (UNIBEN). Specifically the study centres on what are the possible causes of excessive intake of alcohol and drugs amongst UNIBEN students, consequence of excessive intake of alcohol and drugs on the academic performance of UNIBEN students, consequence of excessive alcohol and drug intake on the well-being of students, and solutions proffered in ameliorating the influence of drugs and alcohol on students.

The design research adopted for the research was the descriptive survey research design. The population of this study is centered on the entire students of the University of Benin, the Taro Yamane formula was used in establishing the sample size of the study due to its large population. A total of 395 questionnaires were administered to respondents for the collection of data. The research instrument used for the study was a self-structured questionnaire. The research instrument was validated by the project supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science (HKS). The reliability correlation coefficient of 0.86 was obtained, showing the instrument was reliable. The data collected were analyzed statistically using the statistical package of social science (SPSS) software. The results from our study indicate that alcohol and drug related problems are important factors in school-related functioning. This study also highlighted the need to keep students' use of alcohol and illicit drugs as an important concern for prevention initiatives at all levels of the society surrounding the adolescents.

Finally, the study recommends that excessive alcohol and drug intake should be prevented right from the home, abstinence from alcohol and drugs while schooling is essential for students to perform well in academics, improve student’s mental coordination and avoid functional impairments and an end to relationship with peers who are alcohol and drug addicts would also help in reducing the influence alcohol and drug have on students.
