ABSTRACT

 The study was designed to investigate the factors that influence the career choice of secondary school students in Ovia North East local government area of Edo state. To achieve the purpose of the study, five research questions were raised and examined. Data was collected from hundred (100) respondents randomly selected from five (5) secondary schools in the local government. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The survey research design was adopted for the study. The data was analyzed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation.

The findings from this study reveals that parents, peer group, social culture and school environment are the major factors influencing the career choice of secondary school students in Ovia North East local government area of Edo state. Findings also show that the financial status of parents is an influences the career choice of the students.

Some of the recommendations made include schools should develop and implement career awareness programs that expose students to a wide range of professions. It also recommended that policy makers should develop policies and programs to ensure that career guidance remains relevant and effective in schools.
