Abstract

This study examined factors influencing nurse abuse by patients and relatives in a tertiary health institution in Edo State. With workplace violence in healthcare on the rise, the research identified key patient-related, nurse-related, and institutional contributors. A descriptive crosssectional survey was conducted using stratified proportional and simple random sampling to select 257 participants. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed with SPSS version 24. Findings revealed significant patient-related factors, including mental health conditions, dissatisfaction with care, and communication barriers. Nurse-related factors such as stress and emotional fatigue were also identified, along with institutional issues like understaffing, poor working conditions, and inadequate training on handling aggression. While a correlation between patient-related and institutional factors was observed, it was not statistically significant (χ² = 21.521, p = 0.100). This study highlights the complexity of nurse abuse and the interplay of various contributing factors. Despite the weak statistical relationship, the findings stress the need for comprehensive interventions. Recommendations include targeted educational programs, improved staffing levels, enhanced communication strategies, and training on managing aggression. Creating a supportive work environment is crucial for ensuring nurse safety and improving patient care outcomes.
