ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to investigate the rationale of dyscalculia as a predictor on the academic performance of Pupils in primary schools in Benin City, Edo State. Four research question were raised and four hypothesis formulated to guide the study.
Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The study population consists of all pupils in public primary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. A total number of 100 pupils were randomly sampled from 10 public primary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State for the study. The researcher used structured questionnaire as the instrument for the data collection. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other expert in the department of EECP. To ensure the reliability of the instrument, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient was used in analyzing the responses received from the students which gave 0.89. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage and descriptive statistics comprising of mean. Criterions mean score of 2.5 was used as the benchmark for the purpose of decision making.
The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Frequencies. The findings revealed that Dyscalculia disorder is prevalence among public primary schools pupils in Ovia North East Local Government area Benin City, Edo State and this is due to that fact that; most pupils have trouble solving math and find it difficult to stick to the grade level in math.
Based on the findings, some recommendations were made which include: . Teachers should develop different teaching methods to accommodate individual needs of pupils and help those with dyscalculia disorder to improve their learning abilities.
Home and classroom environment should be improved on for effective cognitive development of pupils.
Multisensory instructions should be used in teaching younger pupils for them to develop different ways to learn skills and understand concepts.
