ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to examine some factor hindering the teaching of computer science in senior secondary school in Edo state Ovia North East Local Government Area as case study. It is well know fact that computer science is a very important subject in this present generation. In other to direct the study four research question were raised: What are the challenges affecting teaching of computer science in secondary school?, What are the factors hindering the effective teaching of computer science?, How does teaching aids affect the effective teaching of computer science?, How does societal factor affect the effective teaching of computer science?
The research population comprises of male and female students drawn from the three selected secondary schools and the unit of the population shall be one hundred (100) students drawn from the three schools. The research instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. It was design to critically examine the factors hindering the effective teaching/learning of computer science and how is affecting the student academic performance. It was design on a four point likert scale (comprising of strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree) in order to supply data as regards teacher and student opinions in the factors hindering the effective teaching/learning of computer science.
From the finding it was observed that there was lack of basic computer resources and infrastructures, lack of qualified computer science teachers, lack of practical make student devote less time to computer lesson, students do not secure adequate textbooks, the negative attitude of school authority and government towards funding of computer facilities affect effective teaching and learning in computer science, parent and community support effects the use of computer for effective learning, lack of accessibility and high cost of computer and its facilities affect the effective teaching of computer science.
Some of the recommendations were made are the government should employ skillful personnel with B.Sc. (Ed.) and B. Ed. computer Education to teach the subject in our secondary schools. The parliamentarian should pass a bill on stabilizing the price of computers in the market to make it easier for people to acquire at a reduced price.
