ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The development of a nation is closely linked to the empowerment of women, as women play a central role in homes and society. Women's empowerment movements have evolved through waves of feminism, focusing on political, social, and economic rights, and are crucial for achieving global gender equality, as outlined in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Empowered women contribute to economic growth, decision-making, and challenging gender stereotypes, benefiting their families and communities. Despite progress, women still face barriers in asset ownership, decision-making, and reproductive rights, particularly in developing countries, where empowerment remains a key to sustainable development. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the factors associated with women’s empowerment in Egor, Benin city, Edo state. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 551 women in Egor, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Participants were chosen using a multi-stage sampling method. Data were gathered through a well-structured questionnaire, adapted from prior studies on factors related to women's empowerment. The data were analyzed using SPSS, with the significance level set at p<0.05. RESULT: The mean age of the respondents was 32.4 ± 9.3 years, with the majority (47.9%) being between 30 and 39 years old. A large proportion of both the respondents and their spouses had attained tertiary education, 406 (73.7%) and 352 (81.1%) respectively. Most respondents' occupations fell under Skill Level 2. Overall, 543 (98.5%), 511 (92.7%), 534 (96.9%), and 509 (92.4%) of the respondents agreed that women should have the same opportunities as men to earn and control their own money, own assets (mainly physical items like phones, refrigerators, cars, xvii televisions, etc.), participate in decision-making, and negotiate sexual relations with their husbands or partners respectively. CONCLUSION: The majority of women in this study have achieved the highest levels of formal education, are gainfully employed, and earn substantial incomes, reflecting a high degree of empowerment. However, persistent societal, religious, and cultural beliefs continue to hinder full empowerment among the participants. The implementation of awareness programs through community leaders, women’s advocacy groups and NGOs will actively educate women on their rights, empowering them to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions.
