ABSTRACT

The mass failure of students in the English language is a growing concern in educational systems worldwide, and the Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State in Nigeria is no exception. The aim of this project was to investigate the factors associated with the significant failure rates observed among senior secondary school students in English language examinations within this region. By examining various variables such as teaching methods, teacher quality and qualifications, socioeconomic factors, limited access to learning resources, inadequate infrastructure, and inadequate teacher student ratio, this study sought to identify the root causes contributing to the alarming trend of mass failure in English language education. The design adopted for this study was the descriptive research design. Five (5) research questions were raised . A representative sample of students ( 250) , and teachers( 12) were selected from the twenty (20) schools within the Ovia North East Local Government Area. A structured questionnaire was employed to gather information from participants. The collected data from the survey was statistically analysed. Following the analysis, the results were  presented in the form of tables, which depicted the frequencies and percentages of the responses. The findings of the study revealed the factors affecting the Mass Failure of Senior Secondary School Students' in English language in Ovia North East Local Government Area. These include but are not limited to , Teaching methods, quality and qualifications of teachers , Inadequate resources, among others. Some recommendations were made to impove the performance of Senoir secondary school students in English language. These include : Teachers should be provided with regular training through seminars, workshops, and in-service conferences. This will help update their knowledge and improve their ability to teach English language effectively in schools, Schools should endeavours to stick to the standard ratio of teachers to students which is 1-35 , that is one teacher to 35 students. This would ensure that class rooms are not overcrowded and each child has better chances of learning and teachers should employ effective teaching methods that would suit the Students, among others.
